漢白玉是一種名貴的建築材料，所謂「玉砌朱欄」，華麗如玉，所以稱做漢白玉。天安門前的華表，金水橋，宮內的宮殿基座，石階，護欄都是用漢白玉製作的。漢白玉是中國古代皇 家建築、雕刻使用的名貴石料，故宮、天壇、天安門金水橋等經典建築都有大量使用。在人民英雄紀念碑、人民大會堂、毛主席紀念堂等當代國家工程中，也有廣泛應用。
