A fake edition of The Washington Post has been circulated around D.C. by pranksters claiming Donald Trump has resigned.

The real newspaper warned Wednesday that bogus editions have been printed and handed out around the city as well as a sham website going online.

The fake front page reads "Unpresidented" with the false news that Trump would leave the White House on May 1, 2019.

It goes on "Trump hastily departs White House, ending crisis" with a second headline reading "Celebrations break out worldwide as Trump era ends".

The actual paper, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, was forced to tweet about the forgery, writing: "There are fake print editions of The Washington Post being distributed around downtown DC, and we are aware of a website attempting to mimic The Post"s. They are not Post products, and we are looking into this."

Online people took to Twitter to say they had been handed the paper outside Union station and the White House, with some calling the move "problematic".

One said: "@washingtonpost you might want to deal with the lady handing out fake copies of the Post outside Union Station. I tried to explain why this is problematic but she wasn"t having it."

Another added: "The fake @WashingtonPost newspaper being passed around Union Station has an accompanying parody website and the source code is pretty amazing."

Anti-Trump organizer L.A. Kauffman that she had been handing the paper out on Wednesday and said the sham news was nine months in the making.

She told NPR: "This paper is a dream, it"s not a deception."

The fake paper is reported to be the work of author Onnesha Roychoudhuri and the activist pranksters known as the Yes Men.

They wrote in a blog that "thousands of commuters" were handed the "spitting image" Washington Post.

The post reads: "It"s anything but far-fetched. We"re already seeing unprecedented levels of protest and resistance. Now we just need to ask ourselves: What"s next? This paper offers a blueprint to help us reclaim our democracy."

In 2008 the same activists said they were behind the distribution of fake copies of the New York Times that falsely reported the end of war in Iraq.

Trump has repeatedly referred to the real Post as the "Amazon Washington Post".
