Emigrate /"em?gre?t/ 和 immigrate /"?m?gre?t/ 有什麼區別？

Emigratemeans to leave one country and settle in another.

Emigrate的意思是從一個國家離開去往另一個國家定居。

(Emigrate focuses on the point ofdeparture.)

強調了「離開」這個節點

Immigratemeans to enter a new country with the purpose of staying there.

Immigrate的意思是以呆在那兒為目的進入一個新的國家

(Immigrate focuses on the point ofarrival.)

強調的是「到來」這個節點

To emigrate and to immigrate are similar in meaning, but there is a difference. To emigrate focuses on the point of departure, while to immigrate focuses on the point of arrival.

去emigrate 或者去immigrate意思上是很相近的，但是也有區別。emigrate強調了「離開」這個動作，而immigrate強調了「到達」這個動作。

For example:

Iemigrated to England in the 1990s.

我在二十世紀九十年代移民去了英格蘭。

("I left my homeland in the 1990s.")

我在二十世紀九十年代離開了我的故鄉。

Iimmigrated to England in the 1990s.

我在二十世紀九十年代移民到了英格蘭，

("I"ve been living in England since the 1990s.")

我從二十世紀九十年代就到英格蘭生活了。

My memory trick is to note thatimmigrants come 「in,」 and both "immigrant" and "in" start with theletter I. Many readers also wrote in to note that people whoemigrateexita country, and both "emigrate" and "exit" start with theletter E.
