清代咸豐年間，因西方資本主義實力入侵及國內太平天國起義的影響，導致政局危機四伏，財政基本枯竭。清政府為挽救幣制行將崩潰之勢，而鑄造咸豐大錢。當百以下稱「重寶」，「咸豐重寶」又可分為當四、當五、當八、當十、當二十、當三十、當四十、當五十，共八等。

由於咸豐重寶當前錢幣流傳下來的不多，存世的十分稀少，所以該錢幣是十分珍貴.咸豐重寶當五十錢可謂是是咸豐大錢的珍品。由於鑄造時間早，所以也是自古以來古泉愛好者最關心並致力於收藏和欣賞的計值錢幣。在諸多咸豐大錢之中，應當推舉咸豐重寶當五十錢幣為最。

此件藏品「咸豐重寶」四字，書法風格獨特，「咸」更為尤顯，正是那「戴書」版無疑。其文字書寫莊重，筆劃有力且橫直豎立，布局協調。其背穿左右滿文寶泉，其中「泉」字滿文書寫亦見個性，特徵與鐵母和鐵錢一致。而背穿上下漢文「當五十」三字，與面文書意一致，頗見力道，端莊俊朗。毫無疑問，就其書相而言，本藏品出滿文「寶」字上下圈之間筆劃稍粗，有所粘連外，其餘皆與鐵母高度相似，若以鐵范銅斷之，則其出於鐵母，難以否定，故其乃官爐出品，書相無異無邪，其門可開矣，值得入手珍藏！

There is no doubt that, as far as the book phase is concerned, the strokes between the upper and lower circles of the Manchu character "Bao" in this collection are slightly thicker and somewhat adhered to each other.
