在英語里其實沒有量詞這一詞類，在漢語里所說的一頭牛，一匹馬，一枝筆，一本書在英語里並沒有區別：a cow, a horse, a pen, a book，都是冠詞後面加上可數名詞。

在漢語里有許多簡單的物品，在英語里則需要成雙成對的表達：

a pair of glasses (scissors, spectacles, trousers, pants, pliers)

(一副眼鏡，一把剪刀，一副眼鏡，一條褲子，一條褲子，一把剪鉗)等。

英語的 … of … 結構既可以修飾可數名詞，也可以修飾不可數名詞，如：a piece of paper, a piece of information, an article of clothes(一張紙，一條消息，一件衣物)。

漢語里的表示度量衡的量詞在英語里可以找到相應的表達結構，即 … of …。

比如：a cup of water, a packet of cigarettes, a basket of vegetables

(一杯水，一盒香煙，一籃子蔬菜)。

最有意思的就是英語關於各種動物群體的稱呼了，各不相同。如：

an army of elephants(一群大象);

a pack / throng of wolves(一群狼);

a batch of dogs(一群狗);

a brood of chicks(一群小雞);

a hive of bees(一群蜜蜂);

a host of monkeys(一群猴子);

漢語中的形象量詞在英語里也能找到對應，如：

許多形象量詞，不僅說明了數量，還有動態和修辭的含意，比如：

英語和漢語關於表示數量的詞的用法還有一點不同。

漢語說一杯好茶，在英語里則是一好杯茶：

a nice cup of tea。
