Australia: Hard up family find ￡20,000 gold nugget on the beach

An Australian family who were having money troubles have found a 624-gramme gold nugget worth ￡20,000 on the beach.

A father-of-two was walking with his daughters and dog on the outskirts of Bendigo, Victoria, when they made the discovery.

The man, who wants to stay anonymous, told the Bendigo Advertiser: "I actually walked right past it but my daughter pretty much kicked it as she was walking.

"She then goes - dad, is this gold? I said, I think it might be."

He headed to the supermarket to weigh the gold and it came in at 624 grammes, or 20 ounces.

"We"ve come on some tough times so it"s really good because we"ve been struggling financially. It couldn"t be better timing really," said the man.

Experts have verified Sunday"s find as genuine and say it is worth around A$35,000 (￡20,000).

"Just having it at home, I"ve been like where do we store it? I haven"t been sleeping very well and we think it"s best just to sell it," he told the Bendigo Advertiser.

They haven"t sold the gold yet but the man says his family will be heading back to the same spot to try their luck again.

"Usually when you find a nugget that big, there will be more gold around so hopefully that"s the case," he said.

In September last year, an even larger nugget containing more than 2kg of gold was unearthed by a man using a metal detector in Western Australia.

That find nicknamed the "duck"s foot" because of its shape was estimated to be worth A$110,000 (￡59,000).
