作為薩格勒布觀景塔設計大賽的決賽選手，位於伊斯坦布爾的Superspace公司為薩格勒布的一座袖珍木材觀測塔提出了一個新概念。

A finalist in zagreb『s observation tower design competition, Istanbul-based SUPERSPACE has proposed a new concept for a pocketed timber observation tower in Zagreb, Croatia. Designed to be an iconic gate, the project would be sited between the old and new city. Called Ascension, the project takes inspiration from Zagreb"s historical and natural iconic landmarks. Facing the south bank of River Sava, the tower"s form is derived from the character of the old town"s existing towers integrated with a new vertical forest.

Ascension was made to represent and empower connections with the past and future. The design explores nature and the man-made, old and new, as well as ground and sky to create a strong flow and visual relationship.primarily functioning as an observation tower, the positioning of the intervention garners views far and wide – from the immediate architectural history of the built environment to the wooded landscape of the mountains in the north. with the context in mind, the shape of the proposed form has been designed to consider the existing architecture of zagreb, while incorporating a high degree of transparency, creating a visual connection through and funnelling the flow of pedestrians.As one of the famous stops of the Orient Express, Zagreb has long welcomed artists, actors and writers throughout history. The site for Ascension is literally in the middle of the city on the camber of River Sava and on the border of Novi Zagreb Zapad.

As the team states, the historic city of Zagreb is composed of a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and government buildings which make it a popular tourist zone. The city expanded east and west during the first half of the 20th century. The 2nd half gave way to constructions to the south of River Sava, resulting in 「Novi Zagreb」. For decades, New Zagreb was largely left alone due to its inhumanly scaled monumental socialist architecture and lack of cultural, public and commercial facilities.

the tower is envisioned as a timber construction, or so called 『wooden skyscraper』, with the natural material forming a 『shell』 of warmth. to break up the verticality of the architectural expression, a series of curved terraces articulate the structure. reached via stairs or an elevator, the platforms intend to provide an ideal way to see the city from above. spotted with trees, the proposal also connects people to nature, resulting in an 『aerial forest』 within the urban context of zagreb.

Today, New Zagreb is changing, with emerging office buildings, sports halls, shopping centers and a museum alongside open, public spaces. Ascension creates a focal point to the plaza located at the intersection of the main retail streets connecting the River Sava to Dubrovnik Avenue. Facing the old and the new city, Ascension connects the riverbank with the greenery of this new urban development.
