gild the lily

Gild the lily字面意思是「給百合花鍍金」。這種表達方式來自戲劇大師莎士比亞。他在歷史劇《約翰王》中寫道：

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, to throw a perfume on the violet, to smooth the ice, or add another hue unto the rainbow……is wasteful and ridiculous excess.

給金子鍍上金箔，給百合塗上顏色，給紫羅蘭灑香水，把冰磨光滑，給彩虹添顏色，是多此一舉的。

後來，paint the lily就演變成了gild the lily。

to improve or decorate something that is already perfect and therefore spoil it

畫蛇添足，多此一舉

例：

Should I add a scarf to this jacket or would it be gilding the lily?

穿上這件外套我再配條圍巾好嗎?不會顯得畫蛇添足吧?
