lump在這裡作「忍受」講。這個字的來源有兩個說法：有人說，它是由look(看來)、grumpy(脾氣壞)二字合成的，指人們強忍不如意之事的樣子;另外一些文字學者則說，lump是模仿grump(發脾氣)、mump(慍怒)等字而成的，之所以用l作字頭，是要跟like字押頭韻(alliterate)，所以，lump只可以在like it or lump it這個成語里解作「忍受」，否則就不可以作「忍受」講了。

If you tell someone to like it or lump it, you mean that person must accept a situation they do not like, because it cannot be changed.
