One of thecommunication skillsToastmasters teaches is to eliminate verbal pauses when speaking, whether giving a speech, talking on the phone, or having aface-to-faceconversation.

「國際演講會」（Toastmasters）教授的一個溝通技巧是在發言時消除言語停頓，不論你是在演講，打電話，還是進行面對面的交談。

Verbal pauses are when you say um, ah, uh, you know, etc. While your brain is searching for the next words to say, your mouth keeps on going andblurts outmeaningless extrasyllables.

言語停頓是當你說「嗯，啊，呃，你知道」等詞，當你的大腦正在尋找下一句要說的話時，你的嘴會繼續說，無意義的多餘音節便脫口而出。

Verbal pauses also include bridge words like and, but, and so. If you say one of these words and hang on it before you actually know what you』re going to say next, it』s a bridge word.

言語停頓也包括橋接詞，如「和，但」等詞。如果你說了一個這樣的連詞詞，但是在你想清楚接下來要說什麼之前停頓了下來，那麼這種連詞就是橋接詞。

Another form of verbal pause is the repeated word. You keep repeating your last word until you figure out what to say next, like and and and.

言語停頓的另一種形式是不斷重複某個字或詞。你不停重複你的最後一個詞，直到你找出接下來要說的話，像「還有，還有，還有…」。

One of the meeting roles in Toastmasters is the Ah Counter. The person who fills this role changes every week, and his/her job is to count the verbal pauses of everyone who speaks during the meeting and then to tell each of us how we did at the end of the meeting.

國際演講會的會議角色之一是「啊」計數人。扮演這個角色的人每周都會發生變化，他/她的工作是計算在會議期間發言的每個人的言語停頓次數，然後在會議結束後告訴我們每個人今天的表現。

This is incrediblyeye-opening.

When I first started in Toastmasters, I might have 10-20 verbal pauses during a meeting. Now I』ve got it down in the 0-2 range. SomeveteranToastmasters members have gotten good enough that it』s rare they』ll ever have a verbal pause. But some new members are challenged to commit less than 10 verbal pauses per minute of speaking.

這真的很開眼界。

當我第一次參加國際演講會時，我在會議期間可能有10-20次言語停頓。現在我已經把它控制在0-2的範圍了。一些經驗豐富的演講會成員已經變得足夠好，很少會出現言語停頓。但是有些新成員面臨的挑戰是做到每分鐘說話不到10次的言語停頓。

The simplest replacement for a verbal pause is a silent pause. When your brain stops feedingintelligiblewords to your mouth, stop talking. Don』t say um, ah, y』know, sooooo, etc. If you』re addicted to verbal pauses, this may feel uncomfortable at first, but you eventually get used to it. Remember that you don』t have to fill every minute ofairtimewith noise.

有一個替代言語停頓的最簡單的方法：沉默停頓。當你的大腦還沒有考慮好你要說的確切辭彙時，就先別說話。不要說「嗯」、「啊」、「你知道」、「所以啊」之類的話。如果你平時習慣於言語停頓，沉默停頓最開始可能會讓你很不舒服，但你遲早會習慣它。你要知道，你不需要每時每刻都在講話。

Verbal pauses are distracting in communication. They can make you sound less intelligent and clear. Theymuddleyour message. Verbal pauses are simply noise, not communication. You don』t need them, and your communication will be more effective once you eliminate them.

在交談中，言語停頓也是容易讓人分心的。它們會讓你聽起來不那麼機敏和思路清晰。它們你的表達更加混亂了。言語停頓不屬於溝通，而是噪音。你不需要它們，去掉它們，你的交流會變得更高效。

1.face-to-face英 [ fe?s,t? fe?s] 美 [ fes,t? fes] adj. 面對面的；當面的

e.g.Would you do this in a face-to-face meeting?

你會在一個面對面的會議中做這樣的事情么？

2.syllable英 [ s?l?b(?)l] 美 [ s?l?bl] n. 音節

e.g.The accent falls on the third syllable.

重音落在第三個音節上。

3.eye-opening[ ai,?up?ni?] adj. 使人開眼界的

e.g.For an American, it was eye-opening from the first moment.

身為一個美國人，我從開始一刻起就大開眼界。

4.veteran英 [ vet(?)r(?)n] 美 [ v?t?r?n] adj. 經驗豐富的

e.g.On the way to the meeting, I asked a veteran campaigner how many people we needed to avoid embarrassment.

在路上，我問一個組織競選活動的老手，需要有多少人到場我們才不會顯得難堪？

5.intelligible英 [?n tel?d??b(?)l] 美 [?n t?l?d??bl] adj. 可理解的；明了的

e.g.I guessed he uttered those words, though his voice was hardly intelligible.

我猜他說出了這幾個字，雖然他的聲音是難以聽清的。

6.airtime英 [ e?ta?m] 美 [ ε?,taim] n. 電影或電視節目開始的時間

e.g.Even when the media do provide campaign coverage, the candidates may not get much direct airtime.

即便媒體真正報道競選時，候選人得到直接亮相的時間可能也不多。

7.muddle英 [ m?d(?)l] 美 [ m?dl] vt. 混合，混亂；使咬字不清晰；

e.g.You d better not muddle me about, but tell me the truth.

你最好別把我弄得糊裡糊塗，而是把實情告訴我。
