馬小秋：丁龍的故事

在微信朋友圈裡，看到了一篇感人至深的人物介紹的文章。文章里所介紹的是一位平凡而偉大的中國人丁龍，一個既不識字，又沒什麼技能的中國人。100多年前，丁龍為謀生而被迫販賣到了美國做勞工，成為了美國大名鼎鼎的卡朋蒂埃將軍的家僕。

I read a very touching personage introduction article through WeChat Moments. The article is about an ordinary yet great Chinese named Dean Lung who is illiterate and has not skills. He was sold to the United States for a living 100 years ago. There he became a household servant for Horace Walpole Carpentier, a famous general in the United States.

卡朋蒂埃將軍雖然聲名顯赫，但卻一身纏繞著不良的習氣，視財如命、脾氣暴躁，酗酒後會粗暴地打罵僕人。面對這樣一個聲名顯赫卻又嚴重缺乏自身修養的不良之人，所有僕人都選擇了離開。但這時的丁龍，以他的忠義之心，說出了最令人動容的語言：雖然你確實脾氣很壞，但我認為你畢竟還是個好人，中國的孔夫子曾說過：受人之託，忠人之事，人要忠心。這就是丁龍之所以沒有選擇離開的原因，這種智慧的選擇，源於其父親的言傳身教。由此可見，家教是何等的重要。

Although General Carpentier was prominent, he had various bad habits. He was miserly and bad-tempered and used to beat and curse servants brutally after getting drunk. All the servants chose to leave in face of such a prominent yet seriously uncultivated master, but Dean Lung, with his kind, considerate and loyal heart, said the most touching words: 「Although you really have a bad temper, I think that you are a good man after all. Chinese Confucius once said, 『Try your best to do what is entrusted to you by others』. One should be loyal.」 This is the reason why Dean Lung didn』t choose to leave. This wise choice arises from his father』s teaching through words and deeds. This shows how important family education is.

丁龍的父親，雖然窮到了無力撫養孩子的地步，但他卻受祖上的教育，把最為重要的人生智慧傳給了兒子，以至於丁龍受用一生並成就了平凡而偉大的人生。丁龍能在被販賣的過程中跟卡朋蒂埃將軍結緣，這何嘗又不是其祖上的功德所致呢？

Although Dean Lung』s father was too poor to raise his children, he was educated by his ancestors and passed on his most important life wisdom to his son who benefited in his whole life and achieved an ordinary yet great life. The acquaintance between Dean Lung and General Carpentier when he was sold out also resulted from the merits and virtues of his ancestors.

丁龍以他的忠義和善良無私的品徳，感動並改變了卡朋蒂埃將軍，使其最終推動並成就了聞名世界的哥倫比亞大學東亞系(漢學系）的創建與發展。

With his loyalty and consideration, Dean Lung moved and changed General Carpentier who later pushed forward and accomplished the establishment of East Asian Faculty (Sinology Faculty) in the world-renowned Columbia University.

最後我要說，丁龍的名字跟任何宗教無關，他的智慧，他的忠義來源於祖上一代一代不識字的言傳身教。真理無關信仰，更無關宗教。真理的存在即是事物本來的實相。任何盲從的宗教，都不及當下的起心動念來得真實，道法自然。自然本無字，哪有字可識。識字注字意，何解慎深理。

At last I』d like to say that Dean Lung has nothing to do with any religion. His wisdom and loyalty originate from the teachings by his illiterate ancestors generation after generation through by words and deeds. Truth has nothing to do with belief or religion. The existence of truth is exactly the original reality of things. Any slavish religion is not more real than the current thought. Tao follows nature. There were no words for reading in the original natural world. Later words are created for us to read to understand the profound meanings behind them.
