丨詞源/The Origin of the Word

一般認為，單身狗的起源，來自於周星馳的經典電影《大話西遊》。「那個人樣子好怪。」「我也看到了，他好像一條狗誒。」這句《大話西遊》里的對白，形象地描畫出一個單身者的孤獨和沒落。

其實，在很早之前，人類就開始以狗自比，在中國最早可追溯到孔子時代。

《史記·孔子世家》有這樣的記載：孔子和弟子在鄭國走失，一個鄭國人看到孔子的弟子說：「東門有人，其顙似堯，其項類皋陶，其肩類子產，然自要以下不及禹三寸，累累若喪家之狗。」孔子弟子轉告孔子，沒想到孔子沒有生氣，反倒欣然笑著說道：「形狀，末也。而謂似喪家之狗，然哉！然哉！」

In fact, since a long time ago, people were starting use 「Dog」 to describe themselves. It can date back to the age of Confucius.

但是，豁達如孔子之人畢竟是少數，在漢語語境中，狗大部分時間都承載著絕對的負面含義，比如狗官、狗急跳牆、狗眼看人低等詞都是常見的帶有貶義色彩的詞語。《現代漢語詞典》（2002年增補本）中，「狗」這個詞條下收錄了17個詞語，其中有15個都帶有非常強烈的貶義色彩。

但是，在國外，狗的地位就高了很多。西方涉及狗的辭彙多含褒義，如a lucky dog（幸運兒），a gay dog（快樂的人），love me，love my dog（愛屋及烏）。很多影視作品中的狗也都帶有鮮明的正面形象，比如《無敵眼鏡狗》、《忠犬八公的故事》、《人狗奇緣》等。

歪果仁甚至把狗上升到了文化的高度，希臘哲學家第歐根尼推崇像狗一樣生活，甚至以此開創了一個學派——犬儒主義，目的是為了追求質樸的真實，拒絕奢華的偽善。

But, people who are as wise as Confucius always the few; in Chinese, the word 「dog」 contains negative meaning in most of time. There are 17 words with 「dog」 in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (the supplement edition of 2002), 15 of them are used in disparaging expression.

Dogs are more popular out of China. The words with 「dog」 are always used to express positive meanings, such as a lucky dog, a gay dog, love me love my dog. Dogs in movies also have a positive image, such as Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Hachiko: A Dog s Story, Maeumi and so on.

丨釋義/Interpretation

除「單身狗」外，XX狗的說法其實早已充斥了人們的生活。從學生狗，到上班狗，再到加班狗，月底窮成狗，七夕虐成狗……可以說，你的一生就是一條狗的進化史。

理論上講，在以下三種場合中，人們往往自稱為狗：

Besides 「Single Dog」, our life has already fulfilled with the saying of ** dog, student dog, working dog, work overtime dog, poor as a dog… Your life is the history of the evolution of a dog.

Theoretically speaking, people always call themselves 「dog」 in the following three ways:

1.處於某種慘境。

說自己為XX狗必定是表達自己凄慘、不如他人的處境，比如說失戀的人會稱自己為「失戀狗」，而熱戀的人鮮有稱自己為「熱戀狗」的。同理，窮人會說「窮成狗」，而富人沒有「富成狗」一說。

1. In a dire situation

People who call themselves 「dog」 usually want to show that their lives are worse than the others. For example, those who are disappointed in love call themselves 「lovelorn dog」, while people who fall in love never call themselves 「love dog」. Similarly, poor people call themselves 「poor dog」, but rich people won』t call themselves 「rich dog」.

2.深陷某種事物不能自拔。

如果你對一樣東西或者某個領域特別痴迷，也可以稱自己為「XX狗」，相當於「XX控」的意思，比如「賽車狗」、「健身狗」、「動漫狗」等。

2. Trapped in something

If you are obsessed with something or some field, you can call yourself ** dog. Such as, race dog, workout dog, comic dog, etc.

3.處於一個龐大的群體之中。

有時候，自稱為狗只是為了找尋一種歸屬感，表達自己與周圍的人其實「臭味相投」，「學生狗」、「上班狗」等說法也因此而來。

其實，自稱為狗，很多時候只是一種自我保護、自我疏解的幽默。面對生活中的壓力與迷惘，偶爾放縱一次，學著四腳著地地思考，也未嘗不可。

3. Within a large group

Sometimes, the one self-proclaimed a dog only wants to seek for a kind of belongingness, to show he/she is same with others. That is the origins of 「student dog」 and 「working dog」.

In fact, call oneself a dog, is just a kind of self-protection, facing the impression of life, it』s just okay to try to think on all fours.
