本藏品通體以青花裝飾，口沿繪金錢紋一圈，頸部繪卷草紋，這是元青花經典的邊飾。腹部主題紋飾為龍紋戲珠圖，龍鱗雖不相同於戴維德爵士所藏至正十一年銘大瓶的大鱗片，但絕非常見的交錯網狀畫法，而是由細筆勾繪而成的緻密小鱗片，可見繪畫者用心至深和技法高超。此外，本品在整體紋飾布局方面頗見特色，常見此式鋪首罐的腹部會分別繪飾兩層圖案，而此拍品則合二為一，腹部空間畫整個龍紋戲珠圖。據悉，同型的鋪首罐繪飾此種題材者一共有八例，而與本品類似風格者僅見山東明魯荒王戈妃墓出土的青花雲龍紋鋪首殘罐和香港葛氏天民樓典藏青花雲龍紋鋪首罐，其中，前者的整體紋飾分布與本品最為相似，在輔助紋飾畫法、布局上更是幾無差別，如同出自一手。

此器造型古樸，形制較大，端正，氣勢雄偉，罐短頸，鼓腹，肩部塑對稱雙獸耳，氣息宏偉，胎體厚重的巨大型體，腹部繪海濤雲龍紋，龍張嘴吐舌，上頜為靈芝型，無發，鹿角，細頸。龍身有力，鋸齒嵴，魚鱗，三爪，水草肘毛。脛部為不相連的變體蓮瓣紋。青花發色濃艷、明亮、靈動、暈散，顏色呈藍寶石狀。全器由五個部分用胎泥拼接而成。
