問:有的人經濟條件不好,家庭環境不好,身體不好,想通過學佛改變。或者認識到做人,六道輪迴都比較痛苦,然後要往生。帶著這些想法學佛,是不是還沒有脫離「有所求」?是不是還沒有離開貪嗔痴?


Question: There are some people without a fairly well financial condition, a good family or health, and they want to change their life by learning Dharma. Or realizing both being a human being and stuck in the samsara are painful, they prefer to be reborn in the Pure Land. Learning Dharma with such ideas, can we say that they still have desires, or they haven』t got rid of greed, hatred or ignorance?

答:可以,這不叫貪。剛開始修行時必須這樣,很多人都是這樣的。剛開始修行,做不到一點也不執著。比如善,不執著善也就做不到善,執著善念也是修行。我們首先要執著,執著出離心、菩提心,經過執著的修法最後達到不執著的境界。等你真正能夠達到放下、不執著的境界了,那個時候怎麼做都行。其實這都不矛盾。那個時侯我們可以不執著地去懺悔,可以不執著地求往生,可以不執著地做家務,可以不執著地成家,可以不執著地生孩子,都是可以的。「色即是空,空即是色;色不異空,空不異色。」本來都是一體的。哪裡都有佛菩薩,真正有修行,有成就的人,你們在家人當中有,我們出家人當中也有。

Answer: They can learn Dharma and we can』t call that 「greed」. Such is what lots of people do at the beginning of practice, when one can』t make it without any attachment. Take kindness as an example, without the attachment to kindness, one can』t practice kindness, so attaching to kindness is also a kind of practice. At first we should practice with the attachment to renunciation and Bodhichitta, and try to get rid of attachment by practicing with certain attachment. When you can really cast off, you can do whatever you like. In fact, it』s not contradictory. At that stage, we can confess without attachment, hope for rebirth in the Pure Land without attachment, do housework without attachment, get married without attachment, give birth to children without attachment, etc. 「Form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form; emptiness does not differ from form, form does not differ from emptiness, whatever is emptiness, that is form.」 All is one. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas live everywhere. Real practitioners and siddhas can be found among both monks and lay Buddhists.

執著安靜的地方,執著出家人的生活,這也是執著。如果執著了,出家也是造業;如果不執著的話,在家修行也有功德。為了了緣、了債、了生死,為了救度這些有緣的眾生,就需要與他們接觸,否則你怎麼救度他們呢?各有各的緣,各了各的緣。對修行人來說,各有各的任務,各有各的責任;各有各的義務,各盡各的義務。這就是修行。不是非得要求這個,要求那個。


The attachment to quiet places and the life of monastic is also an attachment. With attachments, being a monastic also means creating samsara. Without attachment, being a lay practitioner can also accumulate merits. In order to end karma, debts as well as life and death, and in order to save all sentient beings, it』s necessary to associate with them, otherwise, how can you save them? Different people have different karmas and have to end the karmas by their own. For practitioners, everyone should be responsible for his own duty and task, which means practice. It』s not necessary to desire a particular thing.
