什麼是好人？什麼是壞人？

網友：請問法師，如何辨善惡？以自心問之，可知自己的善惡，如何知真善真惡？

學誠法師：最基本的即十善業：遠離殺生、偷盜、邪淫、妄語、兩舌、惡口、綺語、貪慾、瞋恚、邪見。

Q: Master, how to distinguish virtue from non-virtue so that we can examine our own heart?

A: The most basic virtues are the ten virtues: avoid killing, stealing, wrong conduct, lying, slandering, harsh language, frivolous speech, lust, hate and wrong views.

網友：善有善報，惡有惡報，善惡的標準又是什麼呢？同一件事，在我眼中也許是惡，在他眼中也許就是善。即使對自己對他人有利的行為，並不能保證是對每個人都有利呀！

學誠法師：佛法認為，對自己和他人的現在、未來都有利益的行為稱為善，這一標準是建立在無限生命的前提下的。「他人」的範圍、「利益」的層次，都有所不同，故善也有不同的層次。所以需要學習佛法來擴大心胸、增長智慧。

Q:Master, virtue is always rewarded and evil punished. However, what is the standard to distinguish virtue from evil? The same thing that I judge as evil might be virtue in others view. Even a conduct that benefits oneself and others does not necessarily benefit everyone.

A:Buddhism states that all conducts which can benefit oneself and others at present and in the future are good. This standard is built upon the premise of the infinite life. The range of 「others」 and the level of 「benefit」 vary, hence different levels of goodness. That is why we learn the Buddha dharma to broaden our mind and accumulate wisdom.

網友：尊敬的法師，您好！請問什麼是好人，什麼是壞人？無論對方是好人還是壞人，只要自己做好人就行了，這樣說有道理嗎？

學誠法師：好壞、善惡，都不是絕對的。關鍵是長養自己的一顆慈悲心，常行大悲，利樂有情。

Q:Master, could you tell me how to distinguish a good person from a bad one? Is it right to say that we should try to be a good person no matter whether the other is good or bad?

A:There is no absolute good or bad, virtuous or evil. What matters is to cultivate the spirit of great compassion as the Bodhisattvas do for the sake of all beings.

網友：如果按佛教說的，一切都是無始無終的，那善惡業都是無窮不可計算的，怎麼用善來抵消無窮惡呢？深夜胡思，請教高人。

學誠法師：從究竟的意義來說，無善亦無惡；從事相的層面來說，不是用善來抵消惡，而是順應因果緣起的法則，不斷造善因、結善緣，讓果報越來越好。一切善惡的造作都是為未來負責，不是為結清過去。

Q:If, according to the Buddhist teaching, all things are beginningless and endless, then both good and bad karmas are assumed to be infinite and uncountable. If so, how can virtues offset the infinite evil? Please kindly enlighten me on my midnight fantasy.

A:In the sense of ultimate truth, there is neither virtue nor evil. In the sense of practice, we do not accumulate good karma to offset evil, but to create a better effect in consistency of the karmic law of dependent origination. All karmas, good or bad, are for future consequence rather than for making up for the past.
